Let’s face it. Las Vegas can see the thermometer top 100 degrees during the summer and sometimes can still be quite warm in the fall. This can make it impossible to live without a properly functioning air conditioner, even if you spend a lot of time indoors. If you want to keep your a/c running properly, take a look at some of these common-sense tips. If at all possible, you want to avoid running into problems during the summer when you need your a/c the most. These are some of the best ways to maintain a healthy air conditioning unit.
1. Keep Your Unit Clean
Because air conditioning units in Las Vegas are typically placed outdoors, it’s common for debris to get caught in and around them. If you notice any branches or leaves stuck inside or around the coils, gently remove them. Spraying water on your air conditioner can help it run more efficiently if you remove enough dust, dirt, and debris to help improve airflow and prevent it from overheating. It’s certainly not going to damage your AC unit to do so. It’s a good idea to spray off the condenser coils in particular a couple of times a year. This will help keep everything running like normal while helping to minimize deterioration.
2. Get Freon Levels Checked
If your air conditioner isn’t blowing air that’s as cold as it used to be, this is a sign that it could be low on freon. If you have the proper equipment to do so, you can check this yourself. Otherwise, it may be best to hire a technician to do the job for you. If your unit doesn’t feel like it’s blowing as cold as it should be, give Total Air a call so we can check it out and get your unit recharged properly if necessary.
3. Maintenance
Having regular maintenance done on your a/c unit is an important part of keeping it running at its best. Make sure you have a professional do this for you to be sure the job is done right and that all parts are checked during the inspection. Our technicians clean the unit and take care of any necessary repairs during this appointment, it’s a great idea to schedule your maintenance before the busy part of the season to prepare for the warm weather.

4. Don’t Overwork the Unit
Running your a/c full time every day and night is causing it to work overtime, which is not good and can do more harm than good.
If you need your home to be cooler, instead of turning down the thermostat, it is recommended to use fans to keep air flowing as it will help keep you cooler when you’re indoors. By doing so, you can minimize the wear and tear on your unit so it is less likely to break down.
5. Changing Your Air Filters
A great way to keep your unit running properly is something you can do yourself. That is keeping your air filters fresh and clean by changing them out. Once every 3 to 6 months is standard, and if you have pets it would be a good idea to do inspect and change them out more often to make sure they are clean.
This only takes a few minutes and can minimize the risk of future problems while improving the longevity of the unit.
